Announcer: The e-Learning Lingo Podcast.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Hello, this is Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director here at SyberWorks. Welcome to the 25th episode of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast Series. Last week, Dave Powell talked about the Disability Discrimination Act. This week, Dave will talk about two related terms in performance management: leading and lagging indicators.

So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning lingo?

[theme music]

Mary Kay: Hi, Dave. So what are leading and lagging indicators, and how are they used from a performance management perspective?

David Powell: A leading indicator is a forward-looking metric centered on current and future actions. Leading indicators potentially project and drive future performance. One leading indicator in a business setting might be spending more time with valued customers, because it could drive improvements in customer satisfaction, which would be a lagging indicator.

Conversely, a lagging indicator is a backward-looking metric that reflects the results of previous actions. Lagging indicators are generally measured by historical performance through the end of the time period. An example of a lagging indicator in a business setting would be first-quarter sales or a customer satisfaction rating over a certain period of time.

Improved performance in a leading indicator is assumed to drive better performance in a lagging indicator.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Thanks, Dave! Have a good afternoon.

David Powell: You too! Talk to you soon.
