Announcer: The e-Learning Lingo Podcast.

Mary Kay Lofurno: Hello, this is Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director here at SyberWorks. Welcome to the 103rd episode of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast Series. Last week Dave Powell talked about Teleconferencing. This week Dave defines Trojan Horse.

So I ask you, do you know your e-Learning Lingo?

[theme music]

Mary Kay: All right, Dave, tell us about Trojan horses.

Dave Powell: A Trojan horse is a malicious computer program that appears to be legitimate, but masks or contains a destructive file or application, like the giant wooden horse of legend which sneaked Greek troops in Troy and thus ended the Trojan War.

Mary Kay: All right. How does a Trojan horse differ from, say, a typical virus or computer worm?

Dave: Viruses usually multiply and spread between computers as a result of human actions, while worms normally multiply and spread on their own. But Trojan horses do not as a rule replicate themselves or move between computers on their own. They are usually implanted in a computer from the outside for specific reasons.

For example, they may be placed in your computer to open a back door through which outside parties can gain access for their own malevolent purposes.

Mary Kay: OK. Hey, Dave, thanks. Have a great afternoon.

Dave: You too, Mary Kay. Talk to you soon.

Mary Kay: This is Mary Kay Lofurno, Marketing Director at SyberWorks. Thanks for listening to Episode 103 of the e-Learning Lingo Podcast. This week Dave Powell talked about a Trojan horse. The Episode 103 podcast audio and transcript will be posted on the e-Learning Lingo Podcast blog.

Next time on the e-Leaning Lingo Podcast, we’ll talk about a term used in computer networking and applications. Until that time, have a great week.
