Training helps improve safety in the workplace

Millions of Americans experience violence in the workplace.

Millions of Americans experience violence in the workplace.

Today, there are several issues that impact workplace safety. The obvious areas of safely handling machinery, equipment and potentially hazardous chemicals might be the first issues to come to mind, but there are other hazards that must be addressed.

The workplace is not immune to violence, and as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) details, close to two million American workers are affected by it every year. OSHA defines workplace violence as "any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site." Anyone can be affected by workplace violence, including clients and customers.

As Business Management Daily details, bullying is a workplace issue that can come in many forms. Whether though verbal harassment or online, bullying is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Even more severe is the risk that an employee could bring a gun into the workplace.

The good news is that violent acts may be preventable if members of the workplace are vigilant and able to recognize the signs that a potentially threatening or violent act may occur. According to an article from Business Insurance, training programs can help teach employees how to identify signs of violence and correctly report them.

The article gives an example: The director of health and human services for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission in Austin, TX, Regan Rychetsky, developed a training program that addressed workplace violence and required all new hires and employees to take it biannually.

By developing this program, employees were able to become educated about the steps necessary to combat violence in the workplace. With a learning management system, employers can deliver comprehensive training to help keep the workplace safe from violence.
