The importance of employee onboarding in your company

Train employees in an effective manner with an onboarding process that is right for your company.

Train employees in an effective manner with an onboarding process that is right for your company.

Employee onboarding is one of the most important undertakings a management team should enact and understand. Effective orientation standards and mainstreaming processes could be the difference between a well-trained employee and a worker who leaves after only a few months on the job.

According to a recent study from The International Data Corporation, U.S. and U.K. employees cost businesses about $37 billion each year because of misunderstandings related to job goals and expectations. This cost does not include the high cost of turnover as a result of employees leaving and their replacements having to be trained.

Excellent employee onboarding can:

  • Decrease overall costs related to learning a job by perfecting the process with a timeline of training. This timeline includes weekly goals, hands-on experience and constant communication.
  • Increase productivity by eliminating time wasted on ineffective practices. If a worker is trained well the first time around, he or she will be able to complete the job better and in a more efficient manner.

About 25 percent of the working population undergoes a career change. Eliminate turnover expenses at your company by perfecting your onboarding process. This can be done in three simple steps:

  • Be ready to roll on the first day: Don't make your new hires sit at their desk with nothing to do when they come in. Have a plan ready for action as soon as they sit down.
  • Check in with them regularly: After training is done check in with workers on a regular basis to help with any new questions or to clarify information.
  • Ensure adequate time is given for orientation: Don't rush through training. Employees should have a complete understanding of expectations by the end of the day.
