Report: Investing more in employee training can help firms combat cyber security risks

Employee training can help you reduce your cyber security attack risk.

Employee training can help you reduce your cyber security attack risk.

There's yet another reason to invest in your employee training programs: It can boost your protection against cyber risks. According to a study by Pittsburgh-based Wombat Security Technologies and Boston research firm the Aberdeen Group, firms who increased employee training were able to reduce their cyber security attack risk by as much as 70 percent. Andy Szal, a digital reporter for Industrial Distribution, examines some of the report's findings

One notable conclusion was that companies who successfully had their employees change their responses to threats from social media, phishing or other applications managed to reduce the risks of related security breaches by 45 to 70 percent.

By contrast, the report found that firms that lack employee training may be diluting the effectiveness of even large IT security investments.

Accordingly, Wombat President and CEO Joe Ferrara affirmed the importance of employee training in reducing cyber attack risk:

"Many security officers intuitively know that security education is an important line of defense against cyber crime, but they have trouble convincing senior management to spend the money necessary to execute an effective training program," said Ferrara.

With the North Korean cyber attack on Sony last year still fresh in many business owners' minds, as well as the security breaches by Target, J.P. Morgan Chase and Home Depot, companies are increasingly realizing the importance of increasing their cyber security protections.

As businesses make efforts to boost their security, it is critical that they implement employee training programs that address these areas. In our next article, we'll offer some workforce training tips for guarding against cyber security risks.

A learning management system can help you improve your training, security and compliance.
