OSHA cites New Jersey contractor for violations

OSHA claimed that the company did not take adequate fall prevention safety measures.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently cited the Y.V. General Construction Corp., based in Kearny, for safety violations, including exposing workers to scaffold and fall hazards. The citations pertained to the company's Robbinsville, New Jersey construction site. Following an initial April 2014 inspection of the site as part of OSHA's Fall Prevention program, the agency cited the company for seven repeat and two serious safety violations, amounting to $49,280 in fines.

Given the high risks construction workers face, OSHA has been stepping up its monitoring of the sector to ensure safety compliance. The agency has created a Stop Falls Web Page, containing information with fall protection standards.

Paula Dixon-Roderick, director of OSHA's Marlton Area Office reiterated her agency's commitment to safety in the construction industry.

"Y.V. General Construction continues to place its workers in harm's way by failing to use well-constructed scaffolds," Dixon-Roderick said. "Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry and should never be taken lightly."

Many of these recent violations, including those relating to scaffold and fall hazards, were repeats from a 2011 inspection, making them more serious. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that, in 2012, at least 2,000 workers in the U.S. suffered injuries due to scaffold hazards.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety best practices and compliance in all sectors. A learning management system (LMS) can help in these areas.
