OSHA cites New Jersey construction firm for violations

It is important for construction firms to have employee training and safety procedures in place.

OSHA has cited a construction firm in Bloomfield, New Jersey for $52,470 for violations in fall hazard safety practices. The fine also includes $13,860 because the compliance failure was a repeat violation dating back to 2012. The recent fine stemmed from a February 2014 site inspection, during which OSHA officials noted two employees of the firm not using safety equipment.

The company, Concrete Systems, was working on the Glenwood Village construction project in Bloomfield. The project is expected to be completed by next year.

Joe Rufolo, a safety consultant for the firm over the last four years and former OSHA executive, claimed that his client is "very safety conscious," maintaining that the citations concerned two employees working at the end of their shifts.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 or 3:00 pm when an OSHA inspector examining a neighboring building noticed one of the men climbing up the rebar without a ladder or harness.

OSHA representative Joanna Hawkins emphasized that all violations are serious, explaining: "Anytime an OSHA investigation uncovers violations that is a big deal because worker safety and health is of the utmost importance. Anytime violations are found, that's significant and has to be promptly addressed."

Concrete Systems' citation serves as reminder of the importance of having employee training programs in place, especially in the construction sector. Last month, we wrote about how OSHA is increasing its regulation of the construction industry. A learning management system can help companies centralize their training resources, strengthening safety and compliance.
