How can you increase worker productivity?

Increase worker productivity with three vital tips.

Increase worker productivity with three vital tips.

A more productive workforce can be cultivated through a variety of changes in your workspace. One of these changes is movement.

Taking short breaks periodically to get away from your desk and move your limbs can do more than just improve how you feel physically. These breaks can help improve your mental abilities as well.

Moving around, even in small doses, can increase your overall energy and attentiveness. According to sports scientist Jack Groppel, movement and exercise can lead to a brief period of hyperoxygenation in the brain. The stimulation only lasts briefly, around a minute or two, but it has a lasting effect afterward.

Another study from the Texas A&M Health Science Center of Public Health found that people standing at their desks were 12 percent more attentive than those that remained sitting.

It's not hard to work these moments of movement into your schedule. It can be done by:

  • Going to a colleague's desk to talk instead of sending an email
  • Standing periodically throughout the day
  • Taking the stairs instead of an elevator
  • Walking to a farther bathroom or another part of the office.

Besides movement, there are other ways to increase worker output. These include:

  • Pacing yourself: Space out your workload over the week to avoid time crunches and stress at the end.
  • Setting time limits: Focus on one task to complete in a set amount of time, and see if you can beat the clock. This "sprint mentality," according to Dr. Heidi Hanna, PhD, can be the motivation you need for action.
  • Setting aside time for thought: Take a few minutes out of your day to reflect on what you're doing or what you need to get done. This can help you refocus the rest of your day and shift your goals to meet those tasks.
