Home Depot's citation for lack of consistent training resources demonstrates the importance of companies have LMS programs.

Recent news of a Chicago Home Depot being cited for OSHA violations serves as a reminder to all businesses of the importance of having an LMS that provides consistent employee training. The Chicago Tribune reports that the store was cited both for lack of training and maintenance of industrial vehicles and may be charged $110,700 in fines.

Inspected in January, the Chicago store has 210 workers. OSHA cited the store, in particular, for not removing a service truck that needed repair and not reviewing adequately enough the performance of forklift operators. The Tribune notes OSHA's report that between 2005 and 2013, 105 worker deaths resulted from industrial vehicles in Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio.

The Chicago location was not the only home depot to be cited for violations.

Over the past five years, the Atlanta-based store has been cited 120 times for health and safety violations, according to OSHA. Stephen Holmes, who serves as a Home Depot spokesperson, suggests that there was miscommunication with the regulatory body, and that the company does in fact have many of the training procedures the agency claimed it did not have.

Holmes asserted: "We're extremely serious about the safety of our associates, and customers as well." He continued: "We look forward to addressing these issues with OSHA."

Home Depot's citation serves as a further indication of the importance of companies implementing training programs for employees. An LMS can help with this by providing a centralized platform for organizing training resources, among many other functions and benefits.
