When choosing an LMS, security is essential

Data security should be a priority when selecting an LMS.

Data security should be a priority when selecting an LMS.

Online security has become a major concern for businesses. While breaches at large corporations have been making headlines this year, cyber attacks are a threat that companies of all sizes and across all industries face. These breaches can result in significant financial losses, not to mention the ensuing PR headache.

A recent article on Financial Executives International's online publication, FEI Daily, examines how this affects open-source learning management systems. These systems are not more vulnerable to risk than others, but a single attack can cause problems to all the platforms that use the affected source code. When you're selecting an LMS vendor, be sure to ask about these security measures:

  • External attack tests: A common way to identify a system's vulnerabilities is to regularly attack it to gauge its resistance. Vendors should be able to produce recent reports from such tests.
  • Response to known threats: Developers need to address security bugs, like the well-publicized Heartbleed and Shellshock, through regular software updates and patches.
  • PCI compliance: The payment card industry has strict rules for the security of E-commerce data, so make sure your vendor meets the necessary standards.
  • Data storage: It's in your best interests to know where your information is being hosted. Not all data centers are equally secure, so you need one that meets your specific needs.
  • Data encryption: Ideally, data will be encrypted both in transit during the exchange and at rest once it's stored in the data center.

When it comes to cyber security, there's no such thing as too much information. By asking the right questions you can choose an LMS that will provide you with the functionality you need while keeping your data safe from any attacks.
