OSHA cites Connecticut contractor for 25 serious violations

As the recent string of citations of constructors and contractors demonstrates, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is increasing its monitoring of the industry. Most recently, OSHA has cited Manchester, Connecticut-based Rockville Construction LLC for 25 serious violations of workplace safety and health standards. OSHA has levied $107,100 in fines against the Connecticut contractor, which it claims lacked safeguards against lead, respirator deficiencies, falls and electrical hazards.

Warren Simpson, OSHA's area director in Hartford, called attention to these concerning health hazards at Rockville Construction's work sites.

"The numerous hazards found at this work site exposed employees to potential long-term health hazards from lead contamination and to immediate safety hazards from falls and electrocution," Simpson said. "These basic health and safety safeguards should have been implemented before the work started. Moving forward, these hazards need to be corrected effectively and expeditiously."

Lead can cause damage to the central nervous, urinary, blood and reproductive systems, OSHA explains in its news release. The company failed to remove lead from the paint it used.

In addition, Rockville Construction did not check whether there was arsenic or cadmium at the work site—two substances known to be hazardous. Furthermore, the company lacked a system to notify employees about these hazards, in turn exposing workers to such risks as falls and electric shock from ungrounded outlets and mislabeled equipment.

A learning management system (LMS) can help companies improve their training, workplace safety and compliance with government and industry regulations.
