New York hospital cited for OSHA violations

Capital Playbook reports that Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn has recently been fined $78,000 by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). 

Explaining the fines in its official report, OSHA said that Brookdale did not provide safe working conditions. One particularly alarming report was that a nurse suffered brain damage after being kicked numerous times by a patient. 

In a press release, Kay Gee, OSHA's area director for Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, said: "Brookdale management was aware of these incidents and did not take effective measures to prevent assaults against its employees. The facility's workplace violence program was ineffective, with many employees unaware of its purpose, specifics or existence."

The hospital described the incident as a "tragedy," and reported that it has already strengthened its safety procedures. In addition, a Brookdale spokesperson promised a thorough review of its standards and procedures, and to "correct whatever misinformation led OSHA to issue this citation." 

The citations of Brookdale serve as a reminder to all institutions, including hospitals, to ensure that they have safety training in place, as well as response procedures to wrongful incidents.
