FDA Outlines Operational Strategy for Food Safety and Modernization Act

The Food Safety and Modernization Act will require businesses to comply with new FDA standards.

The Food Safety and Modernization Act will require businesses to comply with new FDA standards.

Federal regulations governing health and safety operations and standards in the workplace are subject to change as they are updated, modified, or as new rules are implemented. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration created the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to reform food safety laws. The act was signed into law in January of 2011 as a response to changes in the global food system that have taken place over the last 25 years.

As part of the act the FDA has proposed seven new rules since January 2013 to "establish the comprehensive framework of modern, prevention-oriented standards mandated by FSMA," according to a post on the FDA blog. Businesses in affected industries need to be aware of what the proposed rules entail so they can ensure compliance when they take effect.

The FDA has recently released a statement outlining the operational strategy for implementing the FSMA. According to the statement, the strategy will require companies that "grow, process, transport and store food" to adhere to established standards.

Comprehensive employee training is a great way to ensure that your business stays up-to-date with FDA standards and regulations. Although it may seem like a difficult task to make sure every employee is properly trained to comply with new rules, it doesn't have to be. A learning management system can be tailored to provide effective education that meets the specific needs of your business. By using a learning management system, you can make sure that all of your employees are receiving the training that will help your company comply with changing FDA standards.
