Evaluating and selecting an LMS: Needs analysis

The first step in choosing an LMS is determining your organization's needs.

The first step in choosing an LMS is determining your organization's needs.

Choosing a learning management system (LMS) is one of the most important processes that companies go through in order expand their technological programs. Finding an LMS that suits the needs of your business can take a significant amount of time, but it's important that you find the best solution.

After a few years with a particular LMS, you may find that the service is not right for your company. Fortunately, the industry is regularly changing, and you will most likely find an LMS that will benefit your organization. The first step in the process is figuring out what exactly your company needs.

If you're replacing an existing LMS, meet with employees who are using the current system and ask them which features they would most like to see improved.

"Sometimes you may get more bells and whistles with more money, but you may not need more bells and whistles," Kristy Murray, the director of the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative, said to Education Week. "The most important thing you can do is sit down with your team and identify the requirements for your particular case."

Next, you will need to learn more about the company's organizational and financial goals by discussing potential implementation with senior management. It is also essential that you talk to the IT department to determine if there are any technological constraints that you will need to consider.

Pinpointing your organization's specific needs will help you focus on organizational goals and keep selection criteria at the forefront of your mind.
