Working on a roof can be a deadly job if the right safety precautions are not taken.

According to the Daily Chronicle, OSHA has fined Tip Top Roofing & Construction Inc. for more than $120,000 in employee safety fines.

OSHA investigated the company's DeKalb, Illinois worksite in November 2014 after receiving complaints that workers were subject to potential fatal falls.

OSHA issued two willful and four serious violations for worker exposure to falls and other hazards. The two willful violations include exposing workers to falls over 22 feet due to lack of fall protection equipment, as well as failing to extend a ladder at least  3 feet above a landing for safe roof access.

The three serious worker violations include:

  • Allowing employees to perform roof work in close proximity to energized power lines
  • Allowing employees to carry large loads of plywood and other materials while climbing ladders
  • Lack of personal protective equipment.

This is not the first time the company has been cited for employee safety violations. The company has been cited numerous times since 2008 for fall safety violations. The most recent citations were in 2013. These previous citations also include lack of fall protection.

"A roofer can fall to his death in mere seconds. By refusing to provide fall protection to its workers, Tip Top Roofing and Construction is gambling with workers' lives and livelihood — and that is unacceptable," said OSHA's Area Director in Aurora, Jacob Scott.

The construction industry is one of the most dangerous working sectors. The leading cause of construction worker deaths is fatal falls. Other prevalent causes of death include being struck by objects, electrocution and being caught in-between. Falls killed over 300 construction workers in 2013.
