What is learning content in corporate settings?

"As someone once said to me years ago, human beings will always have a desire to learn. In the corporate world, the new era of learning platforms is making this easier and more exciting than ever," Josh Bersin, Principal of Bersin by Deloitte, recently wrote. The corporate demand for learning management systems has certainly grown in recent years. In our last post, we discussed three reasons for the rising demand, including the nature of corporate training, the evolving learning market and the need to update learning platforms.

Given the increasing demand for these solutions, it is important to understand what learning content refers to, as Bersin's infographic, "Learning Content is More than E-Learning," expands on. Demonstrating how broad a category it is, Bersin defines learning content as "anything that supports or improves performance." He divides learning content into three groups: "Formal," "Embedded in Work" and "On-Demand and Social."

Formal:

  • Assessments
  • Instructor-led training
  • Seminars
  • Virtual classroom
  • Simulations and games
  • e-learning

Embedded in Work:

  • Development planning
  • Reference materials
  • Electronic performance support tools
  • Customer/peer feedback
  • Rotational assignments
  • After-action news

On-Demand and Social:

  • Search
  • Expert directories
  • Books and articles
  • Podcasts
  • Videos
  • Learning portals
  • Blogs and wikis
  • Forums
  • Social networks
  • Live events
  • Coaching and networking
