Training a top priority for small businesses in 2015

Small business owners plan to hire more in 2015 and invest in new software.

Small business owners plan to hire more in 2015 and invest in new software.

According to Capital One's Spark Business Barometer, small business owners have big goals for the New Year. Rieva Lesonsky, in an article for AllBusiness Experts, delves deeper into these priorities, which include greater investments in employee training and new software.

With the economy improving, small business owners' optimism is stronger than last year, as evidenced by more charitable donations, volunteering and plans to invest more heavily in their companies.

Moreover, while entrepreneurs still care about saving money, that isn't their only priority:

"Entrepreneurs are [not] suddenly becoming spendthrifts. On the contrary, they're still looking for ways to cut expenses," writes Lesonsky. "However, it's not their main focus. Just 13 percent say that improving their margins through better cash and financial management is their number-one business goal in 2015."

Training ranks at the top of small businesses' goals for 2015:

  • Thirty-three percent will spend more on employee training.
  • More than one-fourth plan to hire new employees next year.

Given that almost half of small businesses saw their sales increase last year, their goals for growth aren't surprising. Furthermore, many entrepreneurs have an optimistic outlook when it comes to current business conditions:

  • Fifty-seven percent believe that current business conditions are good or excellent.
  • Forty-nine percent are optimistic about the national economy in 2015.
  • Sixty-two percent are optimistic about their local economies.

To achieve their goals, small business owners plan to invest in the following:

  • Hardware and software (29 percent).
  • Social media (28 percent).
  • Online advertising (26 percent).
