OSHA cites Nevada hospital for eight violations following tuberculosis outbreak

For hospitals, the health and safety of patients and staff is of the utmost importance. To ensure that these standards are maintained, hospitals must implement training protocols and procedures to keep employees aware of what they need to do to maintain safe conditions. 

A crucial part of this process is to make sure that all employees are in compliance with regulations set by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and are following proper hospital procedures. A hospital operating outside of OSHA regulations could not only be fined for violations, but could play a role in unfortunate events affecting the health and safety of patients. 

A Nevada hospital has recently been cited for multiple violations from OSHA. Summerlin Hospital was cited for eight violations surrounding a tuberculosis outbreak at the hospital last spring that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her twins, local outlet KSNV MyNews3.com reported

"The inspections found that some of the proper precautions were not being taken when the patients were admitted to the hospital. The employees were exposed to the tuberculosis and the hospital's plan was not being followed, and there were some deficiencies in the plan as well," Teri Williams with Nevada OSHA told KSNV MyNews3.com.

The multiple violation citations resulted in $39,600 in penalties, although Summerlin Hospital plans to contest the citations.
