Health and safety training helps workplaces stay safe

Training is essential to maintain a safe and compliant workplace.

Training is essential to maintain a safe and compliant workplace.

As we have discussed previously on this blog, health and safety training is an important part of a safe workplace, and necessary for an organization to stay in compliance with regulations. Although it may seem like an overwhelming task for organizations to provide effective training courses, neglecting this important aspect of the workplace can carry drawbacks.

When employees lack adequate training, they may not be able to do the work they are tasked with correctly. This can lead to unsafe conditions that may cause illness or injury, or result in an unsafe product. In industries that rely on specific safety procedures to deal with hazardous chemicals or potentially dangerous equipment, this oversight could result in penalties if the business is inspected by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).

A company in Houston, Texas was recently cited by OSHA for creating a hazardous environment for employees.

"Allied Powder Coating has a responsibility to provide a safe workplace for its employees," said OSHA's area director in the Houston South Area Office, Mark Briggs, according to a press release. "OSHA standards are in place to protect workers from predictable and preventable injuries and illnesses, and the company ignored these standards at the expense of worker safety."

The safety and health of employees should be a priority for every organization. As a result of the inspection, this company was cited for 15 violations, and may face $55,440 in fines.

Organizations looking for an effective way to provide training that is affordable, flexible and easy to manage, can turn to a learning management system. This way, they can provide employees with the skills they need to safely perform their duties, and maintain compliance with OSHA regulations.
