Harvard Business Review: Working from home good for productivity

The researchers found working from home increases productivity.

In recent articles we've discussed the importance of making flexibility an integral part of your workplace. According to a recent study, reported on by Harvard Business Review, working from home also increases productivity.

As part of an experiment, Nicholas Bloom and Harvard graduate student James Liang, co-founder of the Chinese travel website Ctrip, gave the company's call center staff the choice of working from home for nine months. Half the volunteers were allowed to telecommute, while the other half remained in the office as a control group, Bloom explains.

The researchers found that workers who telecommuted not only were more productive, but that their well-being and desire to stay with the company also improved.

The findings were compiled from a combination of survey responses from the employees and performance data comparing the telecommuting and control groups.

While Bloom and Liang suspected the work from home model boosted productivity, the study confirmed it.

Here are some of the benefits the company was able to achieve over the 9-month period, as compiled by Jayson DeMers of AllBusiness Experts:

  • $1,900 savings per employee
  • 13.5 percent more calls completed
  • Significant decrease in the number of sick days
  • Far lower attrition rates
  • Self-reported increased well-being and job satisfaction

Given the many advantages to working from home – borne out by this study – many more companies may be following Ctrip's example.
