Companies plan to focus more on employee training

Companies are increasingly hiring employees who are good cultural fits and can be trained quickly.

Companies are increasingly hiring employees who are good cultural fits and can be trained quickly.

As unemployment hits a six-year low and employee confidence has improved, companies report that they plan to invest more in employee training and retention, Julie Xie of Boston.com reports.

During December, the unemployment rate declined to 5.6 percent, as employers added 252,000 jobs during the month. Given the increased employee confidence and ramped-up hiring, it's shaping up to be a good year for job seekers.

While during the height of the recession (2007-2008), there were fewer opportunities for jobs, "now people are moving, causing their companies to have hiring needs and also promote people," said Edward Fleischman, CEO of hiring firm Execu|Search Group, which serves the greater New York and Boston areas.

As the market moves toward one that favors job candidates, companies must adapt.

According to a survey conducted by Execu|Search, 63 percent of employers report that their biggest hiring challenge in 2015 will be finding qualified candidates. To meet this challenge, 65 percent of business owners say they will put a stronger emphasis on employee training and retention efforts.

Sectors that are experiencing particularly robust growth are healthcare, financial services and information technology. However, many companies in these areas are facing a widening skills gap, as Fleishman explains:

"Technical skills clearly lack in comparison to the growth in technology," Fleishman said. Many companies are now focusing on boosting their employee training programs. During the hiring process, they're searching for candidates who are good cultural fits for the organization and can also be trained quickly.
