3 tips for ensuring your remote workforce is productive

Working remotely offers workers greater flexibility, but it doesn't need to hurt productivity.

Working remotely offers workers greater flexibility, but it doesn't need to hurt productivity.

As an increasing number of companies embrace telecommuting, it's necessary to evaluate the opportunities and challenges of this work model. David and Carrie McKeegan, Co-Founders of Greenback Expat Tax Services, offer tips for managing remote workers in a recent Entrepreneur article.

  • Set specific goals for open-ended projects: Your company likely has dozens of projects in progress at any given time. Making sure they get done is another challenge, and this is where establishing clear-cut timelines comes in. "Try to set short-term, actionable goals to keep the projects moving forward," the authors write. "Even if the goals don't include project completion, breaking them down" into smaller parts ensures that your team can maintain focus.
  • Set up weekly reporting: Many companies have already implemented weekly reports for their remote workers. If you haven't already, you may want to consider adopting the practice. Ask employees who telecommute to submit a report to their manager at the end of each week, which includes their accomplishments from the prior week, their goals for the coming week and requests for assistance on projects in which they feel stuck.
  • Encourage employees to take time off to relax and recharge: By being generous with your vacation and PTO time, your employees will feel less anxious about getting everything done in a time crunch. One of the goals of telecommuting is to allow workers flexibility without sacrificing productivity.

A learning management system can help companies improve their employee training and development programs.
