2014 State of the Industry Report: Spending on employee training training a top priority

Employee training and development remains a top priority for organizations.

According to the Association for Talent Development's (ATD) 2014 State of the Industry report, based on responses from 340 organizations on their 2013 training, employee spending continues to be a top priority. Laurie Miller, director of ATD research services, expands on the report's findings.

On average, organizations spent $1,208 per employee on training and development in 2013, a 1 percent increase from 2012. Additionally, the number of learning hours used per employee increased modestly to 31.5 hours, from 30.3 hours.

While the average amount companies spend for each employee is $1,208, Miller explains that there are other factors that influence organizations, including their size and industry. Small organizations, those with fewer than 500 employees, typically spent $1,888 per employee, whereas midsize organizations with 500 to 9,999 employees spent $838.

Moreover, employees at large organizations received more training hours than those at midsize organizations. Large organizations said that their employees received 36 hours of training, compared to midsize organizations whose employees received 27 hours of training. With more resources, large organizations were able to provide a full day more of training to their employees.

Industry is another factor influencing how organizations allocate resources for training and development. While the nature and scope of training needed in various industries differ, the following metrics demonstrate interesting trends:

  • Manufacturing organizations report on average spending $535, which amounts to 27 hours of training per employee.
  • Healthcare and pharmaceutical organizations spend on average $1,392, equivalent to 24 hours of training per employee.
  • The finance, insurance and real estate sectors report spending on average $1,107, which allows 33 hours of training per employee.
  • Online courses, which can be delivered through an LMS comprised twenty-five percent of training hours.
